“Black Holes” Piece
: On April 23, 2022, the Piano on the Rocks Festival in Sedona, AZ premiered Rubin’s piece, “Powehi: Dark Source of Unending Creation,” for actor and two pianists. Powehi is the Hawaiian term for black holes, coined by Larry Kimura, Hawaiian language activist and instructor. Actor Pamela Fields narrated the piece and pianists Sandrine Erdely-Sayo and Cynthia Raim performed on two pianos.
Rubin immersed herself in reading about black holes in preparation for writing both the text and the music. “At times, I thought I was reading theology — scientists can wax very poetic about these amazing phenomena, which reveal mysteries about the origin of the multiverse.”
